DESCRIPTION
El Chapultepec or "the pec" in Denver, Colorado is one of those legendary bars you hear about through word of mouth and are only able to go to under extremely lucky circumstances. This bar was a Denver fixture since 1933, until recently closing in 2020 and was a beatnik hangout for Jack Kerouac and his crew.
But the history really started in 1968 when Jerry Krantz took it over from his father in law. That's when Jerry introduced jazz at the El Chapultepec. At first it was only a couple of nights a week, but by the time the 80's rolled around there was live jazz every night for free.
And when you see the names of the people who've played here: Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Mick Jagger, Frank Sinatra, and many more - you can understand the importance of this bar to not only Denver Lore, but to the music scene as a whole.
